On the temple grounds, you'll find a well known as "Bijin-mizu" (Beauty Water), where you can freely drink the water.
Kawai Shrine, nestled next to Shimogamo Shrine in Kyoto's Sakyo Ward, has long been revered as a shrine dedicated to the god of beauty.
Its enshrined deity is Tamayorihime no Mikoto, the mother of Emperor Jimmu. Known for her beauty, Tamayorihime no Mikoto is deeply revered as the goddess of beauty, particularly by women.
Kawai Shrine's most famous feature is its 'Kagami Ema' (mirror ema), shaped like a hand mirror. The custom involves drawing your own face on the ema and applying makeup with cosmetics before offering it. The act of adorning the ema with makeup, while wishing for beauty, is a captivating experience for women.
'Kagami Ema' are sold at the shrine office. Eyes are already drawn on the ema; you add the mouth, nose, etc., to complete your self-portrait. Cosmetics are available for purchase at the shrine office, but you can also bring your own.
After applying your makeup, write your wish on the back. Your wish can be anything—romantic fulfillment, beauty, health, etc.
Kawai Shrine also boasts a well known as 'Bijin-mizu' (beauty water), believed to contain water that enhances beauty. Many women visit to draw water from this well, believed to have beautifying effects since ancient times.
Feel free to drink the 'Bijin-mizu'.
Since Kawai Shrine is right next to Shimogamo Shrine, visiting both is highly recommended. Enjoy the rich nature of Shimogamo Shrine and the mystical atmosphere of Kawai Shrine.
Kawai Shrine is a beloved power spot where people escape the hustle and bustle of the city to enhance their inner and outer beauty.
Why not visit Kawai Shrine and make your own beautiful wish come true?
