Daigoji Temple is the head temple of the Daigo branch of Shingon Buddhism, located in Fushimi-ku, Kyoto. It was founded in 874 by Shobo Rigen Daishi and developed as a temple for prayers by Emperor Daigo. The vast temple grounds are divided into Kami-Daigo (Upper Daigo) and Shimo-Daigo (Lower Daigo), each with its own unique appeal. Shimo-Daigo is home to magnificent temple buildings, including the five-storied pagoda and Kondo Hall, both national treasures, and Sanbo-in, which was restored by Hideyoshi. In particular, the Sanbo-in Garden is said to have been designed by Hideyoshi himself and conveys the magnificent Momoyama culture to the present day. On the other hand, Kami-Daigo is located after climbing a steep mountain path, and there are quiet halls such as the Juntei-do Hall (currently destroyed by fire) and the Yakushi-do Hall. Daigoji Temple experienced periods of decline due to the Onin War, but the temple buildings were restored through the restoration by Hideyoshi Toyotomi. It overcame the difficulties of the anti-Buddhist movement during the Meiji period and protected its precious temple treasures. It still houses many cultural properties and is registered as a World Heritage Site as part of the "Cultural Properties of Ancient Kyoto." The scenery created by the cherry blossoms in spring, the autumn leaves in fall, and the natural beauty and historical buildings throughout the four seasons continues to fascinate visitors.
