Sanjusangen-do, formally known as Rengeo-in, is a temple established in the early Heian period. The current main hall, rebuilt in the Kamakura period, is a massive structure stretching approximately 120 meters from north to south. Its name, "Sanjusangen-do" (Hall with Thirty-three Bays), comes from the 33 spaces between its pillars.
Inside the hall, you'll find the principal image of a seated Senju Kannon statue and 1,001 standing Senju Kannon statues. All of these statues are designated National Treasures, and their grandeur and exquisite craftsmanship are truly awe-inspiring.
Each Kannon statue has subtly different expressions and poses; taking the time to observe them reveals their unique character. At either end of the hall stand statues of Fujin (Wind God) and Raijin (Thunder God), along with the Twenty-eight Devas, and numerous other statues placed in front. The entire hall feels filled to the brim with statues, creating the impression of a veritable forest of Buddhist images.
Sanjusangen-do is a historically significant temple and a popular tourist destination. Enjoy beautiful scenery throughout the year, with cherry blossoms in spring and vibrant autumn leaves.
