Sumpu Castle Park is a historical park developed on the former site of Sumpu Castle, which played a pivotal role in Japanese history from the Sengoku period to the early Edo period. It was here that Tokugawa Ieyasu, after unifying Japan, spent his later years as Ōgosho (retired shogun) for approximately 10 years, issuing numerous decrees that solidified the foundation of the Edo shogunate. Within the park, sections of the castle's original inner and main moats have been excavated and restored, offering a glimpse into the vast scale of the former castle grounds.
Particularly noteworthy are the Higashi Gomon Gate and Tatsumi Yagura Turret, along with the Hitsuji Saru Yagura Turret, all faithfully restored using traditional Japanese construction methods. Inside the Tatsumi Yagura Turret, the “Takechiyo Tenarai-no-Ma” (Takechiyo's Study Room) is recreated, said to be where young Ieyasu (known as Takechiyo) received his education from Taigen Sessai, allowing visitors to feel the vibrant pulse of history. The Hitsuji Saru Yagura Turret features a unique “skeleton structure” exhibition, allowing visitors to see the underfloor construction of the turret—a rare sight. Furthermore, the park boasts the beautiful Kōyōyama Garden, selected as one of “Japan's Top 100 Historical Parks,” where visitors can enjoy seasonal beauty and savor matcha tea at the teahouse. Legend has it that mandarin orange trees planted by Ieyasu himself still stand, and the ongoing excavation site of the castle tower's foundation is also open to the public, offering a full day of engaging content for history enthusiasts. Despite its central urban location, this space, where lush greenery harmonizes with historical structures, promises to offer visitors profound inspiration and learning. Don't miss the stunning seasonal landscapes, such as cherry blossoms in spring and vibrant autumn leaves.
