Iōzan Hida Kokubunji Temple

Overview

Hida Kokubunji Temple is a temple of the Koya-san Shingon sect located in Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture. Its mountain name is Iōzan. Legend says it was built around 746 (Tenpyō 18) by Gyōki, following Emperor Shomu's edict of 741 (Tenpyō 13) to establish Kokubunji temples throughout the country. Throughout its long history, it has been affected by several fires and wars, but has been rebuilt thanks to the faith of the people, surviving to this day. The highlights of Hida Kokubunji Temple are its main hall and three-story pagoda, both designated as Important Cultural Properties. The main hall, built in the mid-Muromachi period, houses valuable Buddhist statues such as a seated Yakushi Nyorai statue and a standing Seikanon Bosatsu statue, both from the Heian period. The three-story pagoda, rebuilt in 1821 (Bunsei 4), stands majestically at over 22 meters tall. Hida Kokubunji Temple also features a giant ginkgo tree believed to be over 1250 years old.
