Mikasa Highland

Overview

Mikasa Highland is a vast plateau located east of Matsumoto City in Nagano Prefecture, rising to approximately 2,000 meters (6,562 feet) above sea level. Situated at the northernmost tip of the Yatsugatake-Chushin Kogen Quasi-National Park, it's known as one of Japan's largest high-altitude plateaus. Mikasa Highland is renowned for its stunning natural beauty and 360-degree panoramic views. Enjoy spectacular vistas of the Japanese Alps, including the Northern Alps, Mount Asama, the Southern Alps, and even Mount Fuji on a clear day. The expansive grasslands and the sight of grazing cattle are also iconic features of the plateau. Mikasa Highland has a long history as a grazing area, and today, approximately 300 cattle still graze in the Mikasa Ranch. Spring brings a vibrant display of Japanese fire lilies (Rengetsu-tsutsuji) and alpine plants. Summer showcases lush green grasslands, while autumn paints the mountains with stunning fall foliage. Winter transforms the landscape into a magical scene with beautiful snow and ice formations.
