Kouzenji Temple is a distinguished branch temple of the Tendai sect located in Komagane City, Nagano Prefecture. Its mountain name is Hojaku-zan. It's counted among the five great mountains of Shinano and is also known for the legend of Hayataro, the spirit dog. The legend of Hayataro, the spirit dog, is told throughout Kouzenji and various other locations. While the story's structure is typical, Hayataro's name varies depending on the region; in Komagane, he's also known as Hayate Taro.
