Kawanakajima Kosenjo Historical Park

Overview

Kawanakajima Kosenjo is renowned as the site of four major clashes between Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenshin between 1561 and 1564. Shingen expanded his power from Kai Province (present-day Yamanashi Prefecture), while Kenshin advanced from Echigo Province (present-day Niigata Prefecture), culminating in their confrontations at this location. None of the four battles resulted in a decisive victory, and both armies engaged in a grueling war of attrition. This ancient battlefield represents a pivotal event in the history of the Sengoku period, leaving behind numerous historical records and legends. Kawanakajima Kosenjo Historical Park preserves and showcases this historical site, allowing visitors to stroll through the area and imagine the battles of the past. The park features a statue depicting the legendary single combat between Shingen and Kenshin, along with other historical remnants evoking the atmosphere of the Sengoku period.
