Kanazawa Castle Park

Overview

Kanazawa Castle Park is a sprawling park built on the site of the former Kanazawa Castle, home to the Kaga Maeda Clan. It offers numerous highlights, including significant castle structures and the breathtaking Yuishininmaru Garden, bursting with seasonal blooms. Kanazawa Castle was constructed in 1583 by Maeda Toshiie. For 265 years, the Kaga Clan used Kanazawa Castle as its base, making it the center of politics, economics, and culture in the Hokuriku region. However, following the Meiji Restoration, the castle was abandoned, and parts of it were demolished. Kanazawa Castle Park was developed on the castle's former grounds and opened in 1931. Remaining structures such as the stone walls and moats still stand today. In 2001, important castle structures were restored, including the Hishi Yagura (diamond-shaped tower), the Gojukken Nagaya (fifty-ken long building), and the Hashizumemon Tsuduki Yagura (tower connecting to the Hashizume Gate). These structures are invaluable cultural assets, showcasing the technology and architectural style of the time, and are a must-see for history buffs and casual visitors alike. The park also features the beautiful Yuishininmaru Garden. Commissioned by Maeda Naritatsu, the Kaga Clan lord, for his mother, Shinryoin, this garden was destroyed in the 1945 air raid on Kanazawa but was faithfully restored in 2005.
