Ojiya City Nishikigoi no Sato, opened in October 1989, is the world's only exhibition facility dedicated to Nishikigoi. Nishikigoi originated in the early 19th century in the area known as Nijimura-go (including Ojiya City) when edible carp were selectively bred for their aesthetic qualities. This facility introduces the history and culture of Nishikigoi and conveys their beauty to many people. In the indoor viewing pond, about 150 Nishikigoi of about 40 varieties swim, and you can see Nishikigoi being raised in earthen ponds from spring to autumn throughout the year. Ponds are arranged in the garden, and carp of different sizes and types are kept in each, making it interesting to observe the differences. There is also an owner system where you can own Nishikigoi and watch them grow. Nishikigoi no Sato is recommended not only for Nishikigoi lovers, but also for families and tourists.
