Mount Yahiko

Mount Yahiko is a 634m mountain located in central Niigata Prefecture, and is one of the highest mountains on the Sea of Japan side. From the summit, you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of the Sea of Japan, Echigo Plain, Sado Island, and more. The sunset over Sado Island is particularly captivating, with a beautiful contrast between the orange-hued sky and sea, enchanting many visitors. Mount Yahiko has been known as a sacred mountain since ancient times, and the Okumiya (inner shrine) of Yahiko Shrine is enshrined at the summit. Yahiko Shrine is highly revered as the 'Echigo Ichinomiya' (the most important shrine in Echigo Province), attracting many worshippers every year. Well-maintained hiking trails make Mount Yahiko easily accessible even for beginners. The approach trail starting from Yahiko Shrine is lined with cedar trees, offering a serene atmosphere for a pleasant walk. The summit is about a 1.5-hour hike, with rest areas and observation decks along the way. For those who prefer less strenuous activity, the Yahiko Mountain Ropeway provides convenient access to the summit.
