Mount Oyama Afuri Shrine, located in Isehara City, Kanagawa Prefecture, has long been a center of mountain worship. Its history is ancient, evidenced by the discovery of Jomon earthenware believed to have been used in ceremonies atop the mountain. It’s also known as a place for rain prayers. Following the rise of Shugendo (mountain asceticism) in the medieval period, the shrine received the patronage of prominent samurai clans such as the Minamoto, Hojo, and Tokugawa families. During the Edo period, many commoners made pilgrimages to the shrine in what became known as "Oyama Mairi." This pilgrimage, held annually from June 27th to July 17th, was traditionally women-prohibited and particularly popular among fire fighters and craftsmen.
Mount Oyama Afuri Shrine consists of the main shrine (including the inner and outer shrines) located at the summit and a lower shrine on the mountainside. The lower shrine is accessible via the Oyama Cable Car. Reaching the main shrine from the lower shrine requires a 90-minute hike, offering a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the magnificent natural scenery.
