Yokohama Chinatown began to form after the opening of the port of Yokohama in 1859. Chinese merchants who arrived alongside Westerners started businesses, and the community grew with the increasing number of Chinese immigrants.
Today, Yokohama Chinatown boasts the world's largest scale, with over 600 shops packed together. The distinctive gates you see throughout the area are "pailou" (牌楼), built according to principles of Feng Shui. The Guan Yu Temple, which enshrines Guan Yu as the god of prosperity, and the Mazu Temple, dedicated to various deities, serve as important places of worship.
Yokohama Chinatown offers more than just delicious Chinese food; it's a tourist spot brimming with exotic atmosphere, opportunities to experience traditional culture, and much more. Be sure to visit!
