Mori Garden, situated at the heart of Roppongi Hills, is more than just a beautiful garden. Its history dates back to the Edo period, a distinguished site where the upper residence of the Mori clan of Choshu Domain once stood. It is deeply intertwined with significant events in Japanese history, notably as one of the settings for the Ako Incident and the birthplace of General Nogi Maresuke during the Meiji era.
After World War II, this site hosted the Nikka Whisky factory and the headquarters of TV Asahi, and the garden's pond became affectionately known as "Nikka Pond." However, during the redevelopment for Roppongi Hills, the former Nikka Pond underwent a unique process of ground improvement, was covered with protective sheets, and underwent "underground preservation." The current Mori Pond was newly constructed atop these historical remnants, making it a special place where past and present coexist.
This strolling garden, spanning approximately 4,300 square meters, features a stream flowing around a central pond, surrounded by a variety of plants. It reveals different facets with each season: cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, vibrant autumn leaves, and crisp air in winter. The cherry blossom season, in particular, and the autumn foliage illuminated to coincide with the Keyakizaka illuminations, are truly breathtaking. The contrast between the historical garden and the modern skyscrapers of Roppongi Hills in the background creates a truly unique and unparalleled spectacle.
Benches are scattered throughout the garden, inviting visitors to relax and escape the city's hustle and bustle. With a pizzeria nearby, enjoying a garden lunch here is also a stylish option. There's also a heart-shaped monument, making it a popular spot for dates in the evening.
Roppongi Hills as a whole offers a diverse range of facilities, including the "Tokyo City View" observation deck in Mori Tower, the "Mori Art Museum," luxury brand stores, "TOHO Cinemas Roppongi Hills," and more. By combining a tranquil time in Mori Garden with art, shopping, and gourmet dining, you can enjoy a full day of enriching urban experiences. Roppongi Hills (Mori Garden), where history and cutting-edge modernity merge, promises unforgettable impressions and discoveries to all its visitors.
