Overview
Nokogiriyama is a mountain located in the Bōsō Peninsula of southern Chiba Prefecture, Japan. Its unique, saw-tooth-like profile is the origin of its name. From the summit, you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Tokyo Bay and Mount Fuji – a truly spectacular sight.
Nokogiriyama has a long history as a significant stone quarry, with extensive operations in the past. The remains of these quarries are still visible on the mountainside, showcasing a truly impressive scale. These quarry sites are now developed as tourist attractions, offering a glimpse into the area's past. They've also been popular filming locations for movies and dramas, even rumored to have served as inspiration for the movie "Castle in the Sky."
The mountain is also home to Nihonji Temple, featuring a massive stone Buddha statue and the Hyakushaku Kannon statue, adding to the rich tapestry of sights to see. Nihonji's Buddha statue, dating back to the Kamakura period, is truly awe-inspiring in its size. The Hyakushaku Kannon, a towering 31-meter-tall Kannon statue, is equally impressive and well worth a visit.
Nokogiriyama is also an excellent spot for hiking and climbing. A ropeway and hiking trails cater to all fitness levels. The trails are relatively gentle, making them accessible even for beginners.
Nokogiriyama is a captivating tourist destination where nature, history, and culture converge. Visit Nokogiriyama and immerse yourself in its majestic scenery, rich history, and unique cultural heritage.
