Kairakuen Garden was created by Nariaki Tokugawa, the 9th lord of the Mito domain, with the desire to "enjoy together (偕に楽しむ)" with the people of his domain. The garden is home to approximately 3,000 plum trees of around 100 varieties, and is bustling with plum blossom viewers in early spring. Nariaki built Kairakuen as a place for relaxation for the samurai who studied literature and martial arts at the domain school, "Kodokan," and also opened it to the local people. The garden has many attractions, including Kobuntei, Togyokusen Spring, and a Moso bamboo grove, where you can fully enjoy history and nature. Kairakuen is also said to embody the world of yin and yang, and you can fully appreciate the design of the garden by entering from the front gate.
