Uesugi Shrine

Overview

Uesugi Shrine is a shrine built on the site of Yonezawa Castle's main enclosure, enshrining Uesugi Kenshin, known as one of the strongest warlords of the Sengoku period. Kenshin, also called the "Tiger of Echigo," is famous for his numerous battles against Takeda Shingen. Within the shrine grounds is the Uesugi Shrine Keishoden, which houses exhibits detailing Kenshin's life and achievements. Here, you can see his armor, swords, and letters, gaining a deeper understanding of his character and life. Next to the Keishoden is Matsugaoka Shrine, dedicated to Uesugi Takayoshi. Takayoshi, the ninth lord of the Yonezawa domain, was a renowned ruler known for his reforms that revitalized the domain. A bronze statue of Takayoshi stands within Matsugaoka Shrine's grounds, allowing visitors to reflect on his accomplishments. Adjacent to Uesugi Shrine is Yonezawa Castle Shien, offering local gourmet food and a wide selection of souvenirs.
