Shirayamajima Island

Overview

Shirayamajima is an uninhabited island located off the coast of Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture. Formed approximately 30 million years ago by an eruption of basalt, it's also known as Oshima. Situated about 100 meters off the coast of Yura Coast in the Sea of Japan, it measures approximately 135 meters wide, with a circumference of about 836 meters and an elevation of 72 meters. A concrete pedestrian bridge, approximately 170 meters long, connects the island to the sandy beach of Yura Coast, making it easily accessible on foot. Its scenic beauty has earned it the nickname "Enoshima of Tohoku." Shirayama Shrine sits atop the island, hosting its annual festival on April 15th. The Yura Ocean Fishing Pond on the island offers fishing opportunities from April to October. From July to August, the sightseeing glass-bottom boat, the "Yosei Maru," departs from the island's port. Shirayamajima is a popular tourist spot on the Yura Coast, attracting many visitors. Nearby attractions include Yura Onsen (hot springs) and Yura Fishing Port, making it an ideal base for exploring the area. Shirayamajima offers a rich natural environment and stunning scenery, alongside a glimpse into the region's history.
