Honma Museum

Overview

Honma Museum, located in Yamagata City, Yamagata Prefecture, exhibits art collected by the Honma family, prominent merchants of the Edo period. The Honma family amassed their wealth through rice trading in Yamagata, a domain of the Yonezawa clan, beginning in the early Edo period. Their collection encompasses a wide range of items, including paintings, calligraphy, ceramics, lacquerware, and sculptures. The Rinpa school paintings and tea ceremony-related artifacts are particularly noteworthy for their exceptional quality. The museum building itself is a historically significant structure registered as a Tangible Cultural Property. This Meiji-era Western-style building preserves its original architectural style, offering a tranquil atmosphere where you can leisurely appreciate the Yamagata cityscape.
