Zao Ropeway

Overview

The Zao Ropeway is a ropeway located in Zao Onsen, Yamagata City, Yamagata Prefecture, connecting to the Zao Jizo summit station at an altitude of 1,661 meters. Enjoy the stunning views of the Zao mountain range in about a 10-minute ride. In spring, the snow melts, and fresh green sprouts emerge, dyeing the mountains in vibrant green. Breathe in the invigorating air and enjoy the majestic nature, quite different from the onsen town below. Summer brings a riot of alpine flowers, transforming the area into a true 'flower-filled hundred famous mountains'. You can observe rare plants unique to this high altitude. Winter is famous for its 'juhyo' – snow monsters. These are trees covered in ice crystals, creating a surreal and magical landscape, like snow sculptures. The juhyo are at their most spectacular from late December to early March. Early mornings and evenings are especially beautiful, as the snow monsters sparkle in the sunlight, offering unforgettable photo opportunities. The summit station has an observation deck and a restaurant where you can relax. From the observation deck, you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view, truly experiencing the grandeur of the Zao mountain range. The restaurant offers dishes using Zao's local ingredients and warm drinks. There's also a souvenir shop where you can purchase local products. The Zao Ropeway operates year-round, not just during ski season, so you can enjoy Zao's natural beauty anytime. It's easily accessible to the summit, making it perfect for families and couples.
