Naso no Shirataki (White Waterfall of Naso)

Overview

Naso no Shirataki is a 26-meter-high, straight waterfall located in Nikaho City, Akita Prefecture. It's situated on the Naso River, which flows down from Mount Chokai, and is within the Chokai National Park. Formed from lava flows over 100,000 years old, the area once housed a cluster of lodgings for those ascending Mount Chokai. Nearby is Kinpō Shrine, which houses numerous cultural artifacts from the Heian period. Passing through the shrine grounds and descending a long stone staircase reveals the waterfall in its full glory, surrounded by lush greenery. On the south side of the shrine is the Negāibashi, a 75-meter-long suspension bridge spanning the Naso River, leading to a walkway on the opposite bank and to the upper reaches of the waterfall. The waterfall can be viewed from four different locations: the basin, the observation deck, the shrine grounds, and the suspension bridge, each offering a unique perspective. The sight of the water cascading down the moss-covered rocks, harmonizing with the surrounding trees, captivates visitors. As it's located within the grounds of Kinpō Shrine, which has been an object of faith for centuries, it's also known as a power spot. Designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty in 1932 ("Naso no Shirabaku Valley"), it was also selected as one of the New Japan Tourist Destinations in 1950. When visiting Naso no Shirataki, be sure to also visit Kinpō Shrine. The shrine houses numerous valuable cultural artifacts reflecting its history dating back to the Heian period. Within the shrine grounds is the Negāibashi, a bridge said to grant wishes. The view of the waterfall from the bridge is also exceptional.
