Lake Tazawako, located in Senboku City, Akita Prefecture, is a nearly circular lake with a circumference of approximately 20 kilometers. Boasting a depth of 423.4 meters, it's the deepest lake in Japan, captivating visitors with its mysterious depths. The lake's appearance changes with the seasons; spring brings vibrant greenery reflected on its surface, summer reveals a vivid blue, autumn showcases stunning autumn foliage mirrored in the water, and winter presents a serene beauty in a snowy landscape.
Lake Tazawako is steeped in the ancient legend of "Tatsuko," a beautiful maiden who, desiring immortality, drank from a spring in the mountains and transformed into a dragon, becoming the guardian of the lake. On the lakeshore, you'll find a statue of Tatsuko and Gozaishi Shrine, associated with the spring where she is said to have drunk the life-giving waters.
