Bansui Sodō is the former residence of Bansui Doi, a poet and English scholar who flourished from the Meiji to Shōwa periods. Located in central Sendai, it offers a glimpse into his life. Known for writing the lyrics to "Arashi no Tsuki" ("Moon over the Ruined Castle"), a beloved song even today, Doi served as a professor at the Second Higher School (now Tohoku University) and published numerous poems and essays. This residence was built in 1949 by his students and other citizens after a wartime fire destroyed his previous home and collection of books. He lived here until his death in 1952. Bansui Sodō preserves his living space, allowing visitors to experience his life through his study, bedroom, and more. His beloved desk and chair remain in his study, evoking images of his poetic endeavors. His bedroom displays his bed and cherished kimonos. The garden features cherry and maple trees that he loved, creating a breathtaking display of blossoms in spring and vibrant autumn foliage. Admission is free. By learning about Doi's life, works, and final years, you can connect with his rich sensibility. Conveniently located in central Sendai, it’s an ideal stop during your sightseeing.
