Shiogama Shrine, located in Shiogama City, Miyagi Prefecture, is a historically significant shrine that has long been a center of faith as the leading shrine of Mutsu Province. Its founding is said to date back to the reign of Emperor Jimmu, boasting a history of approximately 2,600 years. The enshrined deities are Shiotuchi no Okami (god of salt) and Shiotuchi no Onna-gami (goddess of salt), revered as sea deities. The main shrine stands at the back of the grounds. Passing through the large torii gate before the main shrine, you'll be enveloped in a sacred atmosphere. The main shrine boasts a beautiful vermilion roof and impressive grandeur. Various other shrine buildings are arranged around it, each housing a specific deity. Shiogama Shrine is also famous for its cherry blossoms. In spring, the grounds are carpeted with blossoms. The Shiogama-zakura, a nationally designated natural monument, blooms later than Someiyoshino cherry blossoms, reaching its peak from mid-April to early May. The sight of countless pink blossoms is truly breathtaking. Beyond cherry blossoms, Shiogama Shrine offers beautiful flowers throughout the year. Furthermore, the shrine commands magnificent views of the vast Pacific Ocean. The contrast between the blue sea and sky creates a breathtaking spectacle, offering a truly refreshing experience.
