Tarumae Garō is a gorge in Tomakomai City, Hokkaido. Located at the southern foot of Mount Tarumae, it's a 'gari' terrain formed by weakly consolidated volcanic ash from a pyroclastic flow during Mount Tarumae's 1667 eruption, eroded by the river. The near-vertical cliffs are covered in a blanket of moss, creating a spectacular sight like a sprawling green curtain. Over 60 species of moss, including *Hypnum* and *Plagiothecium*, thrive here. You can also spot birds like the Japanese Blue Magpie (*yamasemi*) and Japanese Wagtail (*kisekirei*).
Tarumae Garō offers a powerful sense of the majestic natural world and the vibrant life within it. The moss-covered cliffs create a surreal, otherworldly atmosphere. You can admire the scenery from boardwalks and bridges.
Tarumae Garō reveals different faces throughout the year. Spring showcases vibrant fresh greenery; summer, lush foliage; autumn, stunning autumn leaves; and winter, a tranquil snowscape. Each season offers unique charms. Come and experience the wonder for yourself!
By the way, 'garō' means sheer cliff. It was designated as a Tomakomai City natural environment preservation area in 1979.
