Overview

Lake Toya is a caldera lake located in southwestern Hokkaido. It boasts a circumference of approximately 40 kilometers and a maximum depth of 179 meters. Formed within the Toya caldera by a volcanic eruption approximately 100,000 years ago, the lake features Nakajima Island in its center, which was once inhabited. Now, it's home to Hokkaido deer. Lake Toya offers not only stunning scenery but also abundant hot springs and leisure facilities, attracting numerous tourists year-round. Spring showcases a profusion of cherry blossoms, while summer offers opportunities for swimming and boating. Autumn brings breathtaking fall foliage, and winter paints a magical landscape of snow and icicles. Lake Toya is also famous for hosting the 2008 G8 Hokkaido Toya Summit. To commemorate the event, the Hokkaido Toya Summit Commemorative Museum was built on the lakeshore, exhibiting materials related to the summit. Lake Toya is a captivating tourist destination where nature, history, and culture harmoniously blend.
