The "Aurora" was the world's first icebreaker designed for sightseeing, launched in 1988. Before its creation, navigating around drift ice was standard practice. The "Aurora" changed that, aiming to bring the previously inaccessible world of drift ice to the public by crushing through it. On board the "Aurora," you'll feel the sound and impact of the ice breaking. From the observation deck, you'll be awestruck by the vast expanse of the drift ice field. The drift ice flows in from the Siberian continent, with the best viewing period from February to March. During this season, you might even spot animals drawn to the ice, including land animals like Arctic foxes and Ezo deer, and marine mammals like seals. Departing from Abashiri Port, the "Aurora" offers a roughly one-hour cruise. The ship features comfortable passenger cabins, a coffee shop, and an observation deck for a relaxing experience.
