Tachimachi Cape

Overview

Tachimachi Cape is a cape located in Hakodate City, Hokkaido, overlooking the Tsugaru Strait. Situated southeast of Mount Hakodate, its clifftop location offers stunning views, allowing you to see the Shimokita Peninsula on a clear day. At night, the fishing lights of squid fishing boats on the Tsugaru Strait create a magical spectacle. A monument to the poets Yoshii Tekkan and Akiko is also located nearby, making it a popular tourist spot in Hakodate. Tachimachi Cape offers a unique blend of natural grandeur, history, and literature. The nighttime view of the squid fishing boats' lights is particularly enchanting, offering a dramatically different atmosphere from the daytime panorama. The cape is also the site of the grave of Ishikawa Takuboku and his family. Takuboku began his nearly two-year-long wandering journey through Hokkaido in Aoyagi-cho, Hakodate. After his death, his friends, including Miyazaki Iku, erected his grave here overlooking Omoribama Beach, a place he favored. The headstone is inscribed with a poem from his collection "A Handful of Sand": "On the white sands of the small island in the East Sea / I wept and wept / Playing with crabs." Tachimachi Cape is a highly recommended tourist spot to experience the history and nature of Hakodate.
