Goryokaku Site

Overview

The Goryokaku Site is a pentagonal star-shaped fortress ruin from the late Edo period located in Hakodate City. Built in 1866 (Keio 2) by the former Shogunate forces, incorporating French military technology, it became a key battleground in the Boshin War, making it historically significant. Now a well-maintained park, the profusion of Someiyoshino cherry blossoms in spring creates a breathtakingly beautiful landscape, making it a renowned cherry blossom spot. The greatest charm of the Goryokaku Site is undoubtedly its unique shape. The pentagonal star-shaped fortress is exceptionally rare among Japanese castles, and its grandeur is awe-inspiring.
