Tarobo Challenge 2026 is a vertical stair climbing race held at the historic Tarobo-gu (Aga Shrine) in Higashiomi City, Shiga Prefecture. As a key event in the Stairclimbing Japan Circuit (SJC), it attracts top-tier elite athletes. The venue, Tarobo-gu, is a famous shrine dedicated to victory, offering a unique and challenging racing environment with its steep stone steps. The 2026 edition features 12 categories, ranging from professional athletes to children, seniors, and even a special dog-and-owner pair category.

The main draw is the challenge of ascending 379 stone steps within the solemn atmosphere of an ancient shrine. This vertical race offers a unique sense of tension and achievement different from standard running. Spectators can witness high-level speed and technique from elite runners up close. As a significant part of the Stairclimbing Japan Circuit 2026, the race also impacts annual rankings. The event will take place on Sunday, October 11, 2026. Races are expected to run from the morning through the afternoon. By Train

Use the Ohmi Railway's Tarobogu-mae Station or Shin-Yokaichi Station. On the event day, a special fare of 100 JPY for adults (free for children) applies due to the Gacha Fes event. You can walk from the station or use the free shuttle bus provided by the venue.

By Car

There is no general parking at the venue. We recommend parking near stations along the Ohmi Railway line and using the shuttle/train, or approaching via the Yokaichi IC on the Meishin Expressway. Dedicated parking is available for Dog & Pair category participants.

Participation Tips

With diverse categories for all ages and skill levels—including Elite, General, Seniors, Juniors, and even Dog & Pair—there is something for everyone. Note that Dog & Pair participants may need to provide proof of rabies vaccination. The race proceeds in rain but may be canceled in severe weather. Training and physical readiness are essential for safety on the stone steps.
