Event Overview

The Numata-cho Yotaka Andon Festival is the largest summer festival in Numata-cho and is celebrated as one of Hokkaido's three major Andon festivals. Carrying on traditions from Toyama Prefecture, the 2026 edition marks its 50th anniversary. Watch in awe as massive lanterns—standing approximately 7 meters tall, 12 meters long, and weighing about 5 tons—illuminate the night sky. The highlight is the 'Kenka Andon,' a high-energy ritual where the massive structures collide head-on, creating an unforgettable spectacle.

Highlights & How to Enjoy

• *The Grand Collision**: The climax of the festival is the 'Butsukiai,' where large lanterns crash into one another. The roar of the crowd and the rhythmic beat of the drums reach a fever pitch during this intense moment.
• *Spectacular Lanterns & Night Parades**: Dozens of lanterns, featuring colorful warrior illustrations and traditional patterns, are paraded through the streets. These are crafted by local organizations, schools, and the JSDF, creating a magical atmosphere when lit up at night.
• *Interactive Programs**: On the second day, visitors can enjoy hands-on activities such as lantern painting, participating in the parade procession, and watching traditional performances like 'Mochi-maki' (mochi tossing).

Venue & Access

The festival takes place around the downtown area of Numata-cho.

• *By Car**: Approximately 5 minutes from the Numata IC via the Do-O Expressway (from Fukagawa Nishi IC). Traffic restrictions begin at 16:00 on both days; please arrive early and use one of the 23 temporary parking lots available in the town.
• *By Public Transport**: There is no direct JR line to Numata-cho. It is highly recommended to take the 'Special Temporary Bus' from Fukami Station. The fare is 650 JPY one way. The drop-off point is the 'Townspeople' Park Golf Course Parking Lot'.

Tips for Visitors

To get the best view of the lantern collisions, we recommend purchasing a reserved seat. Options include SS, S, and A seats, as well as unreserved seats. Please note that unreserved seats do not provide chairs, so bring a folding chair or a mat for comfort. As temperatures may drop at night, please bring a light jacket.

What to Bring & Etiquette

• *Clothing**: Since this is an outdoor night event, wear comfortable clothes and bring a jacket for the evening. In case of rain, a raincoat is recommended over an umbrella to maintain visibility.
• *Payment**: Please carry cash for the temporary bus fare, local specialty fair, and reserved seat purchases.
• *Safety**: Do not enter restricted areas near the path of the large lanterns or the collision zone. Always follow the instructions of security staff.
