Event Overview

Mitsuhama Hanabi Taikai is a historic summer celebration held around Mitsuhama Port in Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture. Since its inception in 1951, this event has become famous for its overwhelming scale, featuring massive 15-size shells—among the largest in the Shikoku region. What makes this display truly special is its 3D-style choreography, which coordinates movements across the sky, the sea, and even underwater to captify the audience. The festival also features local cultural performances, including brass band music by local elementary students and traditional Suigun Taiko drumming by junior high students.

Before the main fireworks begin, the local student performances add a wonderful sense of community and excitement to the atmosphere.

Schedule

The event is traditionally held on the first Saturday of August. The program typically begins around 16:30 with local brass band and Taiko drumming performances. The main fireworks display is scheduled to run from approximately 20:00 to 21:00. Please note that the event date may be postponed to the following day in the event of inclement weather.

The venue is Mitsu Futo (Mitsuhama Port) in Matsuyama.

  • *Nearest Stations**: Approximately a 15-minute walk from Mitsu Station (Iyo Railway Gion Line) or a 30-minute walk from Mitsuhama Station (JR Shikoku Yosan Line).
  • *Public Transportation**: While extra trains and buses are often scheduled for the event, it will be extremely crowded. Using public transport is highly recommended.
  • *Traffic Restrictions**: Significant traffic restrictions will be in place around the venue. Please be aware that certain areas will be closed to vehicles between 14:00 and 23:00 (times may vary by specific area).

There are both free viewing areas and paid reserved seating options. Paid seats range from single-person chairs to large group tables. If you wish to secure a comfortable view, we strongly recommend purchasing tickets in advance through designated retailers or the official organizers. Additionally, viewing from a cruise ship is a popular option for those seeking a premium experience.
