Mito Kairakuen Fireworks Display

5 min read

Event Overview

The Mito Kairakuen Fireworks Display is a signature summer event held at Lake Senba in Mito City, Ibaraki Prefecture. It is the highlight of the Mito Koumon Festival, typically held in late July. This large-scale event offers a beautiful view of massive fireworks illuminating the night sky over the scenic lake.

Highlights & Tips

The greatest draw is the 'inverted fireworks'—the vibrant colors of the fireworks reflecting perfectly on the surface of Lake Senba, creating a mesmerizing symmetrical view. For photographers, we recommend shooting from a low angle near the water to capture this effect. You can also enjoy various food stalls around the venue, offering local delicacies and unique seasonal treats.

Schedule

  • *Fireworks Time**: 19:30–20:30

Venue & Access

The event takes place around Lake Senba (Senba Park area).

  • *Access from Station**: It is about a 20–30 minute walk from JR Mito Station. Depending on weather and temperature, you may also consider using local buses or temporary shuttle buses from the station area.
  • *Parking**: Parking near the venue fills up very quickly. We strongly recommend using public transportation.

Tips for Visitors

Preparation is key to a comfortable experience. Since the area around Senba Park gets very crowded, arrive early to secure a spot or look for open areas on higher ground or the opposite shore. If you plan to eat at the food stalls, try to finish by 17:00–18:00 to avoid long queues.

Essentials & Etiquette

  • *What to Bring**: As this is an outdoor summer event, bring cooling items like drinks, a folding fan, or a handheld fan to prevent heatstroke. A thick leisure sheet is also useful if the ground is damp.
  • *Clothing**: Wear comfortable clothes suitable for the heat. A lightweight poncho is helpful in case of rain.
  • *Etiquette**: Travel light to move easily through crowds. Please carry your trash home and be mindful of those around you.
  • *Official Info**: Please check the official website for details on payment methods and local regulations.
