Koga Chochin Saomomi Matsuri Festival

Event Overview

The Koga Chochin Saomomi Matsuri is a traditional winter festival held in Koga City, Ibaraki Prefecture. The main highlight is the incredibly dynamic sight of massive poles adorned with glowing lanterns clashing together. The sight of the lanterns illuminating the dark night sky creates an overwhelming and unforgettable atmosphere.

The true thrill of this festival is the intense collision of the lantern-decorated poles overhead. The traditional 'Saomomi' movements are powerful and captivating. For a truly luxurious experience, we highly recommend the Special Viewing Seats. Since the festival takes place during the cold winter season, these seats feature heated Kotatsu (heated tables), allowing you to enjoy Koga's local sake and delicious seasonal delicacies while staying warm and feeling the heat of the festival.

The event is held at the Koga Station West Exit Special Event Area.

Tips for Participation

If you want to experience the festival's energy up close and in comfort, the Special Viewing Seats are highly recommended. These seats come with a heated Kotatsu, so you can enjoy local gourmet food and sake without worrying about the winter chill. Please note that since the Kotatsu seats are designed for 4 people, you may be seated with other guests (shared seating).

What to Bring & Etiquette

As this is an outdoor event held at night in December, please dress very warmly. Regarding reservations and payment for the Special Viewing Seats, you must contact the Koga City Tourism Association in advance. The process involves a preliminary application by phone, followed by payment via bank transfer or cash at the Tourism Association window. Please note that pre-school children are not permitted to enter.
