Autumn Foliage at Mt. Ishizuchi

8 min read

Event Overview

Mt. Ishizuchi (1,982m) is a sacred mountain and the highest peak in Western Japan. It has long been a site of spiritual worship. From early October to early November, the mountain transforms into a tapestry of vibrant colors, attracting hikers and nature enthusiasts. The peak season occurs around mid-October, when the contrast between the vertical rock faces and the colorful foliage creates a truly awe-inspiring sight.

Highlights & How to Enjoy

The beauty of Mt. Ishizuchi's autumn colors changes depending on your altitude. In mid-October, the areas around Tengudake and Misan peak in a beautiful mosaic of red, yellow, orange, and green. The sight of colorful trees set against the sharp, jagged rock peaks is a masterpiece of natural design.

You can also enjoy the stunning views along the ridges and the 'Hakoba Ridge,' where the bright red colors of the botanical shrubs contrast beautifully with the stone. On clear days, the panoramic view extends all the way to the islands of the Seto Inland Sea, offering a view worthy of one of Japan's most beautiful landscapes.

Schedule & Timing

The autumn foliage season generally lasts from early October to early November. For 2026, the expected period is from October 4 to November 3. Please note that the exact peak depends heavily on the weather, so we recommend checking local updates before your trip.

  • *Summit Area Peak**: Around mid-October
  • *Jojusha Shrine Area Peak**: Around mid-October (approx. 20 days around this time)
  • *Lower Slopes**: Around November

Venue & Access

There are two main routes to access Mt. Ishizuchi: the Omotesando (Front) Course and the Urasando (Back) Course.

Using the Ishizuchi Ropeway (Omotesando Course)

  • *Public Transport**: Take the bus bound for Nishikawa from JR Iyo-Saijo Station and get off at the 'Ishizuchi Ropeway-mae' stop.
  • *By Car**: From the Iyo-Saijo IC on the Matsuyama Expressway, take Route 111 and 194. Use the parking at 'Izumiya' (next to Setochi bus stop) or 'Kyoya Ryokan' (opposite the ropeway). Parking fees are approximately 500 JPY per day.

Using Tsuchigoya (Urasando Course)

  • *Public Transport**: Take the JR Shikoku Bus from JR Matsuyama Station and get off at the 'Ishizuchi Tsuchigoya' stop.
  • *By Car**: From the Matsuyama IC on the Matsuyama Expressway, take Route 33 and Prefectural Route 12. Use the free Tsuchigoya parking area.

Important Tips for Hikers

Because of its high altitude, thorough preparation is essential. The Omotesando Course features steep sections with ladders and chains (Ichino-kusa to San-no-kusa), which require high physical fitness and technical skill. Beginners or those looking for a gentler hike should choose the Urasando Course or the hiking paths accessible via the ropeway.

Crowds can be heavy during the peak season. The area near the Misan summit can become very crowded around midday on weekends and holidays, making it difficult to enjoy the view or take photos. To avoid the crowds, plan to start your hike early in the morning to reach the summit ahead of the rush.

Gear, Clothing & Etiquette

  • *Clothing**: Temperatures at the summit are much lower than in the valleys. Bring warm layers and professional hiking gear. For courses with chains/ladders, wear sturdy hiking boots.
  • *Equipment**: We recommend bringing a topographic map, a helmet (if using chain sections), plenty of water, high-energy snacks, and rainwear.
  • *Ropeway Hours**: Operating hours vary by season. For October to early November, the typical schedule is 8:00–17:00 on weekdays and 7:40–18:00 on weekends and holidays.
  • *Etiquette**: Please respect nature by carrying out all trash and protecting the local flora. For the latest rules and hiking information, please check the official website.
