The Teramura Yamaka Fire Festival is a cherished tradition held in the Teramura district of Uchiko. Dating back to 1823, this festival is a profound expression of gratitude for the mountain's bounty and a prayer for a successful harvest. The breathtaking highlight is the sight of the 'Yamanokami' fire characters glowing on the slopes of Mt. Rokkaku, accompanied by approximately 5,000 lights known as 'Ohikari' that illuminate the mountain village. The festival is held annually on August 15. The main festivities run from approximately 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Please note that the event may be postponed to the following day in the event of rain. The sequence of events, including the lighting of the fires, fireworks, and live music, will unfold throughout the evening. Since this is a nighttime event, we recommend planning your arrival for the early evening to fully enjoy the progression of the lights.
The event takes place around the Teramura Shopping Street in Uchiko. During the festival, several free parking areas are available, accommodating approximately 550 vehicles in total. As the venue is located in a mountainous area, please exercise caution when driving or walking at night. If you plan to use public transportation, we highly recommend checking local transit schedules in advance.
