Ohitaki-sai is one of the three major annual festivals at Mogami Inari Shrine in Okayama Prefecture, a deeply significant ritual passed down through generations. This ceremony centers on "Otakiage," a ritual of gratitude where sacred charms (ofuda) are offered to the flames. The rising fire from the Goma altar is believed to carry the prayers and gratitude of the people toward the heavens.
The most breathtaking sight is the powerful, dancing flames rising from the Goma altar. This event takes place over two days in early December.
The ceremony is held in front of the Main Hall (Reiko-den) of Mogami Inari.
As the rituals begin in the early morning, please plan your schedule with plenty of time to spare. The lighting ceremony on the first day is particularly early, starting at 6:00 AM. While the experience of feeling the heat from the Goma altar is incredibly mystical, please remain mindful of your surroundings and follow the guidance of the shrine staff.
Since the event is held in early December, temperatures are expected to be quite low. Please dress warmly to stay comfortable.
