The Oda Toro Matsuri, held in the Oda district of Uchiko, Ehime, is a quintessential summer tradition where the river becomes a canvas of light. As the sun sets, hundreds of glowing lanterns float down the river, creating a serene and mystical atmosphere that transports visitors to a dreamlike world. This community-focused festival beautifully blends local culture, food, and music.
The centerpiece of the festival is the 'Toro Nagashi' (floating lantern ceremony) near the Meiji Bridge. The sight of countless lanterns drifting on the water is a profound and beautiful experience that offers a moment of zen-like calm. Beyond the river, the festival features live stage performances by local students and groups, including the powerful rhythms of Wadaiko (Japanese drumming), brass bands, and traditional Kyogen theater. To complete the experience, wander through the 'Yatai Village'—a collection of food stalls offering delicious local specialties and refreshing drinks to soak up the festive spirit.

While the festivities typically run from evening through the night, the highlight of the evening—the floating lantern ceremony—is expected to begin around 20:00. Please note that if you wish to participate in the lantern floating itself, prior registration may be required.
The main festivities take place at the Oda Branch Office Plaza (Uchiko Town Hall) and the riverbanks near Meiji Bridge. The surrounding area will be filled with various food stalls and local specialty shops.
To catch the most magical moment, plan your arrival to coincide with the start of the lantern floating at approximately 20:00. The combination of traditional Wadaiko drumming and modern music makes for a vibrant atmosphere. Since there are many food stalls, we recommend arriving with an appetite to enjoy the local street food!
As this is an outdoor nighttime event by the river, please dress comfortably for the evening air and bring a light jacket or shawl. It is also wise to bring insect repellent.
