Matsuyama Yakyu-ken Odori is a traditional celebration held in Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture. Formerly known as the Matsuyama Festival, it was renamed in 2022. Since its start in 1966, this event has become one of the four major festivals of Shikoku, known for its deep local roots and high energy. For three days from August 11 to 13, the entire city is filled with music and dance. The festival features the upbeat rhythms of 'Yakyu Samba' and the powerful movements of traditional Yakyu-ken Odori, making it a quintessential summer event in Ehime.
The charm of this festival lies in the changing dance styles each day. On August 11, the 'Yakyu Samba' takes over, featuring lively dances with Brazilian Samba rhythms. August 12 features 'Kigyo-ren' (corporate groups) performing the traditional dance, while August 13 showcases 'Dantai-ren' (community groups). Recently, even rock-style versions of the dance have become popular among younger generations. Additionally, the nearby Matsuyama Port Festival often features large-scale fireworks displays, allowing you to enjoy the festival's heat alongside a beautiful night sky.

To truly enjoy the festival, don't just watch—immerse yourself in the energy! Some groups even allow visitors to join the dance. Since the festival attracts large crowds, plan your travel in advance and check routes beforehand. Moving your body to the rhythm is the best way to feel the energy of a Japanese traditional festival.
