The Kawarayu Onsen Yukake Matsuri is a traditional ritual held every year in the early morning of January 20th (the day of Daikan, or Great Cold) at Kawarayu Onsen in Gunma Prefecture. The tradition dates back approximately 400 years, originating as a ritual to celebrate the resurgence of hot spring waters. In front of the communal bathhouse "Oyu," young men dressed in traditional fundoshi (loincloths) splash hot spring water on one another, creating a breathtaking and spirited spectacle known as a "unique festival" that breaks the winter silence.
The greatest thrill is the sight of hot spring water being splashed amidst the freezing cold. The intense energy of participants divided into red and white teams clashing with hot water, accompanied by rising steam, is a spectacular sight found only during this season. The ritualistic ceremonies and traditional performances are also major highlights. Immerse yourself in the vibrant energy of the hot spring town, enveloped in heat and steam.
The festival takes place in the early morning of January 20th every year. The next scheduled date is January 20, 2026 (Tuesday).
The venue is located in front of "Oyu," the iconic symbol of Kawarayu Onsen.
It is approximately a 15-minute walk from JR Agatsuma Line's "Kawarayu Onsen Station." However, since the festival starts shortly after 5:00 AM, public transport may not arrive in time. We strongly recommend staying overnight in the area and walking to the venue.
It is approximately 60 minutes (about 40km) from the Kan-etsu Expressway "Shibukawa-Ikaho IC." As there is no dedicated parking at the Oyu bathhouse, please use the following free parking lots:
Preparation is crucial for a successful viewing experience. Because the festival occurs in extreme cold before sunrise, please plan accordingly.
Prepare thoroughly for the freezing environment and the possibility of splashing hot water.
