Tenjin Matsuri is the annual festival of Osaka Tenmangu and is ranked alongside Kyoto's Gion Matsuri and Tokyo's Kanda Matsuri as one of the "Three Great Festivals of Japan." With over 1,000 years of history, this dynamic series of rituals is truly a "Festival of Fire and Water." The 2026 edition is particularly special, as the main day, July 25, falls on a rare "triple auspicious day" where Saturday, Taian, and Daimonichi all coincide. This makes it an incredibly significant year for both locals and international visitors.
The greatest charm of Tenjin Matsuri lies in the grand processions held both on land and water, showcasing the beauty of traditional Shinto rituals.
On July 24, the Yoimiya (Eve Festival), you can witness the Hokoroshi Shinto ritual. During this ceremony, Shinto priests float white wooden poles (Hoko) down the Dojima River to the sound of traditional music, creating a mystical atmosphere that signals the start of the festival.
The climax occurs on July 25 during the Hongu (Main Festival) with the spectacular Funatogyo (Boat Procession). Nearly 100 decorated boats line the Okawa River, their lanterns reflecting beautifully on the water. As night falls, approximately 4,000 celebratory fireworks are launched into the sky. The fusion of the illuminated boat procession and the fireworks is the essence of the "Festival of Fire and Water," offering an unforgettable experience.

Access: The nearest stations are Osaka Tenmangu Station (JR Osaka Loop Line) and Tenmabashi Station (Keihan Railway). Due to extreme congestion, the use of public transportation is strongly recommended.
Planning ahead is key to enjoying the festival. If you wish to see the fireworks up close, be prepared for heavy crowds; we recommend arriving early or considering paid spectator seats. Since 2026 is a particularly auspicious year falling on a Saturday, crowds will be even larger than usual.
