Yugo Onsen is a prestigious hot spring destination located in Mimasaka City, Okayama Prefecture, boasting a history of over 1,200 years. It is celebrated as one of the three great hot springs of Mimasaka and is widely known as a 'spring for beautiful skin.' The area is also called 'Sagi-no-yu' (Heron's Spring), inspired by a legend where a white heron healed its injured leg in these waters. The spring water is characterized as a low-osmolarity, slightly alkaline solution containing sodium, calcium, and chloride. The hot spring town is lined with charming traditional inns and hotels, offering a space where relaxation meets unique cultural discoveries, such as toy-themed attractions and railway models.
The history of this land is said to have begun when the monk Nyonin of Enryaku-ji witnessed a white heron healing itself while on a pilgrimage. Historically, it served as a place for 'Toji' (hot spring therapy), where people would soak in warm waters for long periods to maintain health. Since the 1990s, the area has evolved into a 'health resort,' with the development of sports facilities like rugby and soccer fields. Furthermore, the town has successfully branded itself as a 'Town of Toys,' developing cultural hubs such as the Modern Toy Museum and railway model museums that appeal to all generations.
Visitors are warmly welcomed by the 'Karakuri Clock,' a symbol of the town, and the 'Sagi-yu Bridge' at the entrance. Throughout the town, various footbaths and public bathhouses are scattered, allowing travelers to easily enjoy the warmth of the springs during a stroll. Additionally, the town features several museums showcasing antique music boxes, Showa-era toys, and railway models, offering a perfect blend of hot spring nostalgia and retro cultural exploration.
