Yohashira Shrine is a significant spiritual site located in the center of Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture. Its most distinctive feature is the simultaneous enshrinement of the 'Four Pillars' (Yohashira) of deities, a rare occurrence in Japan. By gathering the unique powers of these four distinct gods, the shrine is revered as the 'God of Binding Wishes,' a place where any prayer or desire can be manifested into reality. Due to its excellent accessibility—just a short walk from Matsumoto Station—it is an ideal destination to visit during a break in your sightseeing itinerary.
The shrine is said to have been founded in 1879 (Meiji 12). The four deities enshrined here play vital roles in Japanese mythology, representing the very essence of the universe. These deities—Amenominakanushi, Takamimusubi, Kamimusubi, and Amaterasu—symbolize everything from the origins of the cosmos to the blessings of the sun. Because these gods coexist here, the shrine has been cherished by the local community as a sacred space that governs the creation of all things, human connections, and the eternal cycle of life.
Inside the shrine grounds, you will find the main sanctuary (Honden) which radiates a profound, sacred atmosphere. The complex also includes sub-shrines such as Ebisu Shrine, each representing different blessings. At the amulet and Goshuin (sacred stamp) desk, you can find beautifully designed Goshuin with powerful calligraphy, as well as a wide variety of Omamori (amulets) for specific purposes such as health, traffic safety, and academic success. The scenery within the shrine grounds changes beautifully with the seasons, offering new discoveries with every visit.
You can enjoy the changing beauty of the seasons at Yohashira Shrine. In spring, the delicate cherry blossoms harmonize with the historic architecture, while in autumn, the vibrant colors of the maple leaves create a stunning backdrop. Since the shrine grounds are accessible 24 hours a day, you can experience different moods depending on when you visit—from the profound silence of the early morning to the tranquil, contemplative atmosphere of dusk. Please note, however, that receiving Goshuin or purchasing amulets requires visiting during official reception hours.
When praying, it is customary not just to join your hands, but to consciously focus on the specific role of the deity you are addressing. For example, you might choose an amulet or seek a blessing specifically for matchmaking, business prosperity, or longevity to solidify your connection with the divine. Walking slowly through the grounds to appreciate the historic architecture and the natural surroundings is a wonderful way to clear your mind and find inner peace.
Since Yohashira Shrine is situated in the urban center of Matsumoto, there are many attractions nearby. You can easily combine a visit to the shrine with a walk to historical landmarks like Matsumoto Castle. The surrounding area is also filled with local restaurants and shops, making it a perfect starting point for a stroll through the city. The location is extremely convenient for travelers using public transport, being approximately a 12-minute walk from Matsumoto Station.
No special preparation is required for your visit, but we recommend wearing clothing appropriate for the season. If you wish to receive a Goshuin or an amulet, please ensure you arrive during the reception hours (typically 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM). Most importantly, please note that payments for amulets and Goshuin are primarily handled in cash. Having small change or 1,000 yen notes ready will make the process smoother. Additionally, please be aware that the annual festival (Reisai) takes place from October 1st to 3rd; if you wish to request formal Shinto prayers (Kito), it is recommended to visit outside of these dates.
