"Zoorasia" is one of Japan's largest urban zoos, located in Asahi Ward, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture. The name is a combination of "Zoo" and "Eurasia," reflecting its core theme: "Symbiosis of Life and Harmony with Nature."

The most striking feature is the faithful reproduction of the natural habitats where these animals actually live. The zoo is divided into eight distinct zones based on global climatic zones, utilizing specific flora and terrain to create authentic environments. Instead of high fences, the zoo uses "moats" (natural trenches) to separate visitors from animals, allowing for a closer, safer, and more natural observation of wildlife behavior.

History & Cultural Background

Zoorasia opened in 1996 as part of a development plan related to the relocation of the zoo from Nogeyama Park in Yokohama. Since its official opening in 1999, it has served as more than just an exhibition facility; it plays a crucial role in biodiversity conservation through the "Yokohama City Breeding Center," which focuses on the protection and breeding of endangered species.

For instance, the zoo conducts advanced research and breeding programs, such as the successful artificial insemination of the Tsushima Leopard Cat and the exhibition of the rare Indian Lion (with only about 300 left in the wild). This makes Zoorasia a facility with a strong cultural mission of "species preservation."

We recommend visiting in the morning right after opening. Animals are most active during this time, and because the zoo is quite large, visiting before the temperature rises is more comfortable. On clear days, the scenery is perfect for photography.
