Yashimagahara Wetlands is a high-altitude wetland located at an altitude of approximately 1,630m in the Kirigamine Plateau of Nagano Prefecture. Designated as a National Natural Monument, it maintains a unique and precious ecosystem. Surrounded by the vast, sweeping landscapes of the Kirigamine Highlands, the area offers a different, stunning visage of seasonal flora throughout the year.
This region is a strictly protected area dedicated to preserving the natural environment. The high-altitude wetland ecosystem has been maintained for many years, serving as a vital habitat for rare plants and animals. Local facilities, such as the Yashima Visitor Center (Asami-kan), play an important role in educating visitors about and preserving this local natural heritage.
The wetland features well-maintained wooden boardwalks, allowing visitors to explore the area safely while observing the unique topography. The primary attraction is the changing seasonal vegetation: the landscape is adorned with Rengetsu Tsutsuji (Azalea) around June and Nikko Kisuge (Daylily) around July. Additionally, the area serves as a starting point for routes leading to surrounding peaks like Mt. Kuruma and Mt. Kirigatake.
The beauty of the wetlands depends heavily on the season. The main visiting period is from late April to early November. The peak months are June and July, when the vibrant blooms of Rengetsu Tsutsuji and Nikko Kisuge are in full display. Please note that summer often brings sudden thunderstorms, so checking the weather forecast is essential. Additionally, the area is prone to heavy fog, so be prepared for sudden changes in visibility.
The area is a popular hub for hiking and trekking. There are several routes to enjoy, such as a loop around the Yashima Wetlands (approx. 90 minutes) or a more challenging route toward Mt. Kuruma (approx. 150–180 minutes). You can enjoy a gentle stroll on the wooden boardwalks or embark on more strenuous mountain climbing. However, please be cautious as paths can become slippery after rainfall.
Nearby facilities include the Yashima Visitor Center (Asami-kan) and the Kuruma-yama Visitor Center. Along the Venus Line, you will also find various roadside stations, drive-in restaurants, and local farm shops. Other nearby points of interest include Lake Izumi and the Hoshigatata Ruins.
