Yanaka Ginza is a historic shopping street spanning the Yanaka area of Taito City and Nishi-Nippori in Arakawa, Tokyo. The most iconic feature is the 'Yuyake Dandan' (Sunset Stairs), a gentle 36-step staircase with a 4-meter elevation change. This spot is famous for its breathtaking views during sunset and has frequently served as a setting for various literary works and animations.
The area has developed a deep-rooted local culture since the 1950s. When the stone steps were renovated in 1990, the name 'Yuyake Dandan' was given to them by the writer Mayumi Mori. More than just a commercial area, the street plays a vital role in preserving the historical landscape and local traditions. Its cultural significance is further highlighted by its appearances in creative works, such as the novel 'Yasuashiya Kiriko no Yakusoku' and various animations, making it a destination for fans of Japanese storytelling.
The primary attraction is the 'Yuyake Dandan' staircase. This 15-meter long, 4.4-meter wide path with a 15-degree slope is part of the route descending toward the Yanaka Ginza area from the Nippori direction.
