The Uzushio Whirlpool Cruise offers a front-row seat to one of Japan's most mesmerizing natural phenomena: the whirlpools of the Naruto Strait in Naruto City, Tokushima Prefecture. Visitors can choose between two distinct types of vessels to experience the power of the ocean. The large-scale vessel 'Wonder Naruto' and the high-speed, small-scale vessel 'Aqua Edi' provide different vantage points, allowing you to observe the swirling currents from the surface or even from beneath the waves.
The Naruto Strait is famous for its dramatic tidal changes, which create whirlpools reaching up to 30 meters in diameter. This phenomenon has been a legendary sight for centuries. The cruise services are designed to provide a safe and reliable way to witness this natural spectacle, with schedules meticulously timed to match the natural cycles of the tides as indicated by the official tide tables.

There are two primary vessels, each offering a unique way to experience the whirlpools:
1. Large Vessel: Wonder Naruto
A massive vessel capable of carrying up to 399 passengers. Equipped with a high-power 2000-horsepower engine and a 197-ton hull, it remains stable even amidst intense currents. It features a first-class cabin and an expansive observation deck, allowing you to enjoy the view from both the first and second floors.
2. Small High-Speed Vessel: Aqua Edi
This vessel is designed for speed and offers a truly unique perspective through its specialized underwater viewing room. This allows you to observe the movement of the water and the currents from below the surface. The approximately 30-minute cruise provides a dual perspective of both the surface and the underwater world.
The appearance of the whirlpools changes every day based on the tides. It is highly recommended to check the 'Tide Table' (Shiomi-hyo) before your visit. The best time to observe the phenomenon is roughly 1.5 hours before and after the peak tide. Since operating hours are adjusted to match the tidal flow, checking the schedule in advance is essential.
This is more than just a boat ride; it is an immersive observation of nature. Whether you prefer the open-air, expansive view from the large ship's deck or the intimate, scientific view of the underwater world via the small boat, both approaches are engineered for safety and maximum visibility in the turbulent Naruto Strait.
The embarkation points and ticket counters are located within the popular tourist area of Naruto City. Nearby, you can find souvenir shops and facilities to enhance your visit. You can also view the magnificent strait from the vicinity of the Onaruto Bridge.
