Umihotaru Parking Area is a unique facility located on an artificial island that connects the Kawasaki side and the Kisarazu side of the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line. Surrounded by the sea on all sides, it offers the experience of being on a "floating island." From the observation deck, you can enjoy a vast 360-degree panorama of Tokyo Bay, making it a popular destination for both rest stops and sightseeing. The facility is well-equipped with restaurants, shops, a footbath, and an amusement corner to ensure an enriching stay.
The Kisarazu Artificial Island, where this facility is located, was constructed to connect the undersea tunnel and the bridge sections of the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line. The name "Umihotaru" (Sea Firefly) was chosen through a public competition and carries the meaning of "light floating on the sea." A character inspired by the Umihotaru motif can be seen throughout the facility. Furthermore, the night view of this area is designated as a "Japan Night View Heritage" site, highly valued for its cultural and scenic significance as an island of light floating in the dark sea.
There are many attractions to explore at Umihotaru. The most prominent feature is the observation deck offering a 360-degree view. On clear days, you can see far into the distance, feeling a sense of unity with the ocean. On the 1st floor, you can see the "Cutter Face," a massive monument that allows you to feel the history of the shield machine used to excavate the undersea tunnel. Additionally, the 4th floor features the "Great Corridor with Sea View," allowing you to enjoy the scenery regardless of the weather. At night, the romantic blue illuminations create a completely different atmosphere compared to the daytime.
The appearance of this location changes dramatically depending on the time of day. During the day, the contrast between the blue sea and sky creates a refreshing, open atmosphere. At dusk, the scenery becomes dramatic as the sun sets over the horizon. At night, the beautiful light displays worthy of the "Japan Night View Heritage" designation begin, creating a mystical atmosphere with the facility glowing against the dark sea. Regardless of the season, stopping by during a night drive will grant you an extraordinary view.
Beyond being a simple rest stop, there are many activities to enjoy. For example, at the "Footbath" on the 4th floor, you can relax while gazing at the sea (please note that operating hours vary by day). On the 5th floor, the "Umi Megane ~Aqua Line Theater~" allows you to learn about the charms of Tokyo Bay through visual media. There is also a "KID'S SPACE" for children, as well as photo-worthy objects and animal art benches, making it a great spot for families. You can enjoy dining, shopping, and relaxation while feeling the sea breeze.
Umihotaru connects the Kawasaki side of Kanagawa Prefecture and the Kisarazu side of Chiba Prefecture via the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line. The Tokyo Bay Aqua-Tunnel leads toward Kawasaki, while the bridge leads toward Kisarazu. Located on the major route between Tokyo and Chiba, it is a key hub for driving through the Boso Peninsula in Chiba.
As this is an artificial island in the middle of the sea, please be aware that weather and wind can significantly affect conditions. It can feel much colder than expected due to the sea breeze, so bringing a jacket or warm clothing is highly recommended. The use of drones is strictly prohibited. While photography for personal enjoyment is allowed, please follow all rules. The facility is barrier-free and accessible for wheelchairs, but please be mindful of other pedestrians while moving around.
