Suigyu Onsen is situated at the southwestern edge of the Shizukuishi Basin in Iwate Prefecture. Legend has it that the springs were discovered by farmers from the Kaga Province during the Tensho era, and the name 'Suigyu' (meaning bush warbler) comes from the story of a bird that healed its wounds in the riverbed. The water is a rich sulfur spring with a source temperature ranging from 57°C to 62°C, packed with beneficial minerals. The area has long served as a traditional 'toji' (hot spring cure) site, offering a diverse range of accommodations from large-scale hotels to traditional self-catering inns.
The history of the hot spring is deeply intertwined with the legend of the bush warbler. Historical records even mention that the 9th Lord of the Morioka Clan frequently requested the waters from this area to treat his chronic ailments. In the early Showa era, it was a common sight to see people traveling from the surrounding Morioka area by horse to seek healing in the springs during the agricultural off-season. Since the 1950s, the area has evolved through modern tourism development, balancing tradition with innovation, such as the creation of new industries like pufferfish farming using the thermal water. This unique blend of hot spring culture and food culture makes Suigigu a fascinating destination.
The hot spring town unfolds along both sides of the Suigyu River, allowing visitors to enjoy peaceful strolls accompanied by the sound of flowing water. In the center of the town, you can find the 'Ugisu Yu no Sato Park,' which features a public bath and footbaths (ashiyu) accessible to everyone. A truly unique cultural aspect is the presence of pufferfish (fugu) being raised using the local spring water. Additionally, the surrounding area is dotted with parks and facilities that host seasonal events, allowing you to experience the changing beauty of the seasons.
Suigyu Onsen reveals a different face in every season. From spring to summer, it is ideal for soaking in the springs while feeling the refreshing breeze amidst lush greenery. In autumn, the landscape transforms with vibrant colors, and in winter, you can enjoy the contrast of the warm, healing waters against the serene snowy scenery. The evenings in the hot spring town are particularly special, offering a quiet environment perfect for absorbing the mineral benefits of the water. Combining daytime sightseeing with an overnight stay allows you to fully immerse yourself in the healing power of the springs.
Beyond the traditional hot spring-healing experience, there are various activities to enjoy in the surrounding area.
