Morioka Tsugaki Onsen is a tranquil hot spring area located on the shores of Lake Goshonoko in Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture. The landscape is characterized by the harmonious blend of the calm waters of the reservoir and the surrounding lush nature. The spring water is a simple sulfur spring with a high alkalinity (pH 8.7 to 9.5) and a rich flow of 2,000 liters per minute. The area is a well-established community featuring various accommodations, day-use facilities, and wellness centers.
The history of this area dates back to the late Heian period. Legend has it that during the Zenkunen War, the famous warrior Minamoto no Yoshiie discovered the hot springs while setting up his camp. The name "Tsugaki" (meaning to tie or fasten) originates from the "Tsugaki-ishi" (Tying Stone), a stone with a hole in it where his beloved horse was reportedly tied to rest.
The hot spring town is home to Onsen Shrine (Onsen Jinja/Yakushi Jinja), which holds an annual festival on September 8th. Visitors can enjoy the scenery of Lake Goshonoko while visiting various free footbath (ashiyu) spots scattered throughout the area. Notable spots include the "Yamaichi Te-yu" established in 2007 and the "Nekoishi Ashiyu" in 2009, allowing travelers to easily experience the healing benefits of the hot spring during a stroll. Additionally, from May to November, the local "Ichi-no-Ichi" market is held on the 1st of every month, offering a chance to touch local culture.
The scenery around Lake Goshonoko changes beautifully with the seasons. You can observe the fresh greenery in spring, the vibrant colors of autumn foliage, and the serene, snow-covered landscapes in winter. Beyond staying at local inns, you can enjoy a "footbath tour" using the free public footbaths such as Nekoishi and Ochiai. Walking along the shores of Lake Goshonoko provides stunning views of Mount Iwate. The area is also rich in cultural heritage, including the legendary "Tsugaki-ishi" stone.
There are many tourist attractions located around Lake Goshonoko. Nearby spots include Morioka Handicraft Village, Koiwai Farm, and Goshonoko Wide Park, making Tsugaki Onsen an ideal base for touring the wider Iwate region.
